What we do

Our lactation consultants help mothers raise healthy, happy nurslings. We provide guidance and information about:

  • The normal course of breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding management (how often, when, for how long, is this normal?)
  • Positioning and latching techniques
  • Avoiding or healing sore or damaged nipples
  • Avoiding or healing engorged, tender or infected breasts
  • Slow weight gain or weight loss for baby
  • Oversupply/rapid milk flow
  • Supplementation
  • Expressing/pumping and storing breastmilk
  • Low milk supply
  • Weaning
  • Other issues related to your special situation and goals

What to Expect from a Visit

We want to hear about your breastfeeding goals and family life. We want to hear about you and your baby’s medical history, birth and the problems and successes you are having with breastfeeding. Additionally we:

  • May examine and assess the mother's breasts and nipples
  • May examine and assess the baby's oral anatomy, muscle tone, suck function, and energy level
  • Will observe and assess a feeding
  • Will provide demonstrations, and suggest alternative or supplemental feeding methods as necessary to improve the nursing relationship
  • Will develop a written plan of care and suggest resources and referrals, if needed, to resolve breastfeeding issues
  • Will schedule a follow-up visit or phone consultation.
